Van Hunt was born in the Ohio city of Dayton. Jimmy “Diamond” Williams, the drummer for the Ohio Players, knew his father, Van Hunt, Sr. Hunt began playing the drums at the age of seven and the saxophone at the age of eight, subsequently adding bass and keyboards to his repertoire. He played guitar in a rock band named Royalty, and it was the last instrument he learned to play.
Hunt briefly lived in Arlington, Texas before relocating to Atlanta, Georgia in 1996 to attend Morehouse College, where he studied English but dropped out soon after. To make ends meet in Atlanta, he began creating hip-hop demos for local artists. Through his work on demos, Hunt met up-and-coming record producers and performers like Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri, and TLC.
